To the average person, padding the walls of a gym seems odd. It isn’t until you or a loved one gets into a more physical sport, like mixed martial arts, or wrestling, or gymnastics, or even cheer or any other martial art, that the reason for gym wall padding becomes obvious. The fact of the matter is, when you’re throwing someone, flipping, leaping off things, or doing any number of moves where your body is in motion for an extended period of time, if you come into contact with that wall it is going to hurt.
The best way to prevent that hurt? Pad the wall
Sometimes we misjudge our aim, or where that flip is going to put us. The punishment for a mistake like that can be anything from sprains to broken bones, and those injuries can put you out of commission for a long time. There’s a specific way to wrap your hands when you’re punching things to help prevent injury, and personal padding is always beneficial, especially for wrestlers. Knee pads and elbow pads help ease pressure and reduce the impact that can come from elbowing an especially bony opponent.
Although some of the responsibility is on the people using the gym to keep themselves safe, you should never, ever, ever skimp on safety yourself. Anything that you can do to keep the people using your gym from getting hurt is important to pursue, and can save you a lot of pain and money in the long run – some insurance policies will demand certain things be in place in order for you to be able to even have a policy with them, for example. If you’re a high-risk operation and you’re not doing anything to reduce that risk, you’re going to be in a world of trouble.
